Bears sign Burton to a 4-year deal

The Chicago Bears are upgrading at the tight end position as they have signed former Eagles backup tight end Trey Burton to a 4-year/$32 million deal. Burton is a good player, but he has just been buried on an Eagles depth chart that has Zach Ertz and Brent Celek at tight end. However, Burton was a productive player for the Eagles when he had an opportunity to play last season as he had 248 yards and 5 touchdowns. There is no doubt that he is better than what Chicago had at the tight end position, but this signing still is a major risk for the Bears. Burton has the potential to be a good starting tight end, but he hasn’t really had the opportunity to prove himself in the NFL. Giving him $8 million a year for a guy who only has 629 receiving yards is a major risk for Chicago. The Bears are paying him like he is a top tier NFL tight end even though he clearly hasn’t yet proven that he is. Burton is a good fit for the Bears, but I just don’t understand why they are paying so much to a guy who has been a backup his entire career. If they really wanted to improve the tight end position then they could have paid a few million dollars per year and gotten a proven tight end like Jimmy Graham. The signing of Burton has the potential to be good for the Bears, but nobody really knows if he will be worth the price. However, it is very unlikely that he will be worth the $8 million a year that the Bears paying him.
