The Broncos traded away a key member of their terrific defense as they dealt cornerback Aqib Talib to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a 2018 5th round pick.
This trade doesn’t come as much of a shock since the Broncos have been rumored to be looking to trade away Talib and save $11 million in cap space. The Broncos are looking to clear up some cap room mostly to pursue quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency. This trade will better allow them to accomplish that goal as they now have enough money to make Cousins a major contract offer. However, getting rid of Talib wasn’t an easy decision as he played at an elite level in his 4 seasons with the Broncos. The cornerback position was a major strength though for the Broncos and they still have a couple of good starters on their roster with Chris Harris and Bradley Roby. Denver isn’t getting much in return for Talib as they are only acquiring a 5th round pick in the 2018 draft. However, this trade makes sense for the Broncos as it allows them to have more flexibility in free agency and it allows them to possibly make a huge splash by signing Kirk Cousins.
The Los Angeles Rams had a good secondary last year, but it appears that they will have an elite secondary in 2018. The Rams already acquired star cornerback Marcus Peters in a trade earlier this offseason and now they are adding another star cornerback with Aqib Talib. Teams will have to decide which cornerback that they want to throw at, but that will be really difficult to do since both Peters and Talib are shutdown corners. Los Angeles also only gave up a 5th round pick which won’t have much of an impact on their team. The Rams already had a very good defense and a really good secondary, but the addition of Talib makes their defense arguably the best in the NFL.
